Tour de France comes to town

The Tour de France pedalled its way into London recently. Not being one to pass up on the opportunity to see a major global sporting event up close, I made my way up the A3 from my office in Kennington to take up a position under London Bridge.

After two hours of waiting and increasing amounts of jostling on the pavement, a television helicopter hovered into view, signalling that the competitors were closing in. Moments later a morass of lycra-clad humanity appeared down the road atop their trusty high-tech composite steeds.  Seconds later they were whizzing past us at approximately 30mph. And then a few seconds after that, it was all over. The peloton must has passed by in about 10 or 15 seconds.  In those fleeting moments I fired off a handful of photos and, to my joy, one of them had Vincenzo Nibali in his yellow jersey in near enough a perfect position at the forefront of the frame…
